Empowering Communities: The Heartbeat of the REALTORS® Community Foundation

Written By: Madison Mann

In Edmonton's bustling, vibrant city, a unique foundation thrives at the intersection of real estate and philanthropy. The REALTORS® Community Foundation (RCF), since its inception in 1986, has stood as a beacon of hope and support for the communities its members live, work, and play in. This foundation, created by and for REALTORS® and industry partners, is dedicated to making a tangible impact on the lives of those in need, focusing on shelter, hunger, and accessibility.

A Legacy of Giving

The foundation's journey began with a group of Edmonton Area REALTORS® who envisioned a united front to give back to their communities, making a more significant impact together than they could individually. Over the years, this vision has not only been realized but has flourished, with the RCF investing over $5 million in local communities through more than 750 grants. The commitment of REALTORS® to improve the neighbourhoods where they operate is evident in every dollar raised and every volunteer hour contributed.

Making a Difference Where It Counts

RCF's grants often support small, grassroots charities, filling gaps left by other funding avenues. This includes funding essential costs typically not covered by traditional grants, such as repairs and administrative expenses. The foundation's Flagship Program, introduced in 2020, underscores this commitment by partnering with charities for three-year pledges. This ensures a reliable funding stream for larger projects that can significantly impact the community.

Fueled by Community and Commitment

Funding for these life-changing grants comes from various events, per-transaction donations, contributions from the REALTORS® Association of Edmonton (RAE), and casinos. RCF's approach to fundraising is as diverse as the communities it serves, hosting an annual golf tournament and holiday events and empowering offices and groups through third-party fundraisers. This collaborative effort reflects the foundation's deep roots in the real estate community, with all RAE members considered RCF members contributing to its mission.

Engaging the Community in Giving Back

Beyond financial contributions, the RCF brings the real estate industry together through volunteer opportunities. Monthly volunteer initiatives offer avenues for realtors and industry partners to give back directly, engaging in activities ranging from delivering essentials to helping with construction or serving meals at local charities. These efforts are supported by a volunteer board of governors and various committees focused on finance, event planning, and more. The RCF always welcomes new members eager to make a difference.

Looking Forward

As we gaze into the future, the REALTORS® Community Foundation's vision remains clear: to be recognized by both the national industry and local communities as leaders in community investment. With each grant, volunteer hour, and fundraising event, the foundation moves closer to this vision, proving that the heart of the real estate is not just in transactions but in the profound impact it can have on the world around us.

The REALTORS® Community Foundation exemplifies the power of community and the remarkable things that can be achieved when we come together for a common purpose. To those in Edmonton and beyond, the RCF stands as a testament to the generosity and spirit of the real estate community, forever committed to uplifting and supporting those in need.
