Many of you may not know that there is a drop-in centre dedicated to seniors (aged 55+) in Edmonton’s Core. In operation since 1969, Operation Friendship Seniors Society and Pioneer Place offer services without judgement to improve the quality of life for seniors in need.
This year will mark the eighth donation by REALTORS® to OFSS since 2012 and will bring total giving over $50,000! The Foundation has funded everything from mattresses to decking – projects often needing funds above and beyond fundraising for operational programs and seldom covered by grants. You may have seen the REALTORS® Community Foundation logo on the van used to transport seniors to programs and appointments driving around town, too!
REALTOR® support doesn’t end at funds. For years, former Governor, Rick Lough, has been helping to prepare and serve meals at the drop-in centre. Rick and five other REALTORS® prepared and served lunch in November 2019 as part of REALTORS® Care Week – a national campaign organized through CREA.
For those of you less familiar, OFSS currently manages 350 housing units throughout the inner-city in their Rooming House, Apartments and Lodges. In addition to the housing support, OFSS provides valuable opportunities for seniors to connect, take care of themselves and combat isolation. This includes the drop-in centre, recreation programing including everything from swimming and dance to leather work and bingo; also, transportation to and from programs and appointments. The outreach programs bring services in to seniors from visiting and reading to understanding tricky forms and applications for tax and government monies.
There are a variety of factors that impact a senior’s ability to live life to its fullest. OFSS works collaboratively with service and community partners to build an environment of support to seniors in the inner city and the REALTORS® Community Foundation is proud to play a small part in that success.
