By now many of you have heard about our Flagship Charity program, where two new charities are selected annually to be the recipients of three-year grants totaling $60,000! If this is the first you're hearing of it, you may want to check out this page for a little more detail.
Our 2020-2021 Flagship charities were determined by last year's funding allocation committee. The intention was to announce our two new flagships (joining CASA, YESS and Habitat for Humanity) throughout 2020 to spread the giving excitement out during the year. With a few delays and some uncertainty due to the pandemic, we only announced our first of the two charities, Meals on Wheels this October, and Terra Centre this past week!
Edmonton Meals on Wheels
Since 2014, the Foundation had granted $19,000 to Meals on Wheels' meal subsidy program, ensuring all those who need their services could access them by eliminating the cost barrier. Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers thousands of meals weekly to individuals benefiting from the service across the Edmonton Area, including frozen meal pick up options in some of the surrounding communities. They prepare meals according to a wide array of dietary needs and often their service is what allows individuals to maintain their independence. Many of their clients are seniors, so you can imagine just how essential they became through the pandemic.
Meals on Wheels has not increased the cost of their meals to clients since the 90s! In 'normal' times, they have heavy volunteer support in the kitchen and volunteer drivers Monday to Friday covering routes all across the city. The Foundation was proud to announce EMOW as one of this year's flagship charities right after thanksgiving in 2020, when we also helped with meal delivery. Keep an eye open for future shifts delivering meals and maybe even in the kitchen when it becomes safe to do so. Part of working with our flagship charities is also lending a hand and providing opportunities for REALTORS® to connect more directly with the end recipients of donations.
The Terra Centre for Pregnant and Parenting Teens has received over $114,000 in grants from the Foundation since 2007. Most of the Foundation's funding has gone to empower their housing support program which provides heavily subsidized housing for pregnant and parenting teens. Terra's services ensure that teen parents who are often faced with adversity from many sources in their lives, are able to have the opportunities to build thriving lives for themselves and their children. Terra has many programs including: housing, high school completion, young dads, providing clothing and essentials, mental health, financial support and more.
The Foundation is so excited to be increasing our support for Terra as a flagship charity for the next three years. We look forward to learning more about opportunities to donate in kind and volunteer to support clients at all stages of their journeys. Check out the video below of our surprise announcement from our Board of Governors to Executive Director of Terra Centre, Karen Mottershead. Congratulations to Terra and Meals on Wheels, and thank you for your continued, essential work in building a thriving Edmonton Area.
