The S. Family
The S. Family was immediately filled with worry when they realized that their 3
year-old daughter was struggling to communicate. Her parents witnessed more than just her inability to simply say words like “please,” they also saw her self-confidence decrease, which resulted in her avoiding socializing with other kids and adults – they very thing that parents work so hard to encourage in their children.
The S. Family had just moved to Calgary in 2006 in order for both parents to pursue higher education. Because of the move, their daughter faced starting a new school and making new friends – all of which she was finding difficult due to her stutter. The family met with ISTAR’s Calgary clinician and discussed the Lidcombe Program, which is specially designed for Pre-schoolers. They decided on a treatment plan for their daughter, but found the cost of treatment overwhelming. The family applied to the FAST Fund and was approved to receive funding for 90% of the treatment costs.
The family participated wholeheartedly in the treatment, learning strategies to help strengthen their daughter’s speech fluency. She is now 5 years old and speaks just like any other child, without fear or interruption. She is successfully attending kindergarten and has made many wonderful friends. The S. Family credit the FASR Fund at ISTAR for helping their family with their “happy ending!”
