Habitat for Humanity
The REALTORS® Community Foundation is dedicated to supporting organizations involved in shelter, homelessness, hunger, crime prevention and special projects. So what better fit then Habitat for Humanity? For two years now, the Foundation has teamed up with the Alberta Real Estate Foundation (AREF) to sponsor a home for needy families in Edmonton.
2008 – Habitat for Humanity: Kirkness Build
News Release: On April 8, 2008, over 30 REALTORS® came to the ground-breaking ceremony of the Habitat for Humanity building project initiated by the REALTORS® Community Foundation and to meet the family who will be moving into the home. Foundation President Melanie Boles says, “It is important for REALTORS® to be involved with this project because we recognize the importance of affordable housing. This is providing a wonderful opportunity for REALTORS® to give back to a family and to help improve their quality of life”.
The Habitat partner family, (including mom and three girls), express their overwhelming appreciation; “We are very appreciative of the REALTORS® Community Foundation and all the volunteers who are generously helping us build our home”. The REALTORS® Community Foundation provides support to charities working with Shelter, Homelessness, Hunger, and Crime Prevention. Since 1986, the Foundation has contributed over $1.8M to the community.
The Habitat for Humanity Kirkness Project will provide affordable housing to 18 families upon completion in 2009. Habitat for Humanity Edmonton has build over 82 St. Albert Blitz Buildes to date and will have provided over 100 homes in the community by the end of 2008. 2009 – Habitat for Humanity: St. Albert Blitz Build
News Release: The City of St. Albert is paving the way for these builds by funding over $490,000 towards two duplex lots for Habitat for Humanity. This funding enables the organization to mobilize community partners and volunteers to bring these affordable homes to completion. His Worship, Mayor Nolan Crouse, will turn sod to celebrate Habitat for Humanity’s first ever build in St. Albert.
This is the second time these Foundations have paired up to support a Habitat for Humanity home build. The Alberta Real Estate Foundation supports initiatives that enhance the real estate industry and benefit the communities of Alberta. The REALTORS® Community Foundation provides support to those in need by working with charities involved in shelter, homelessness, hunger, crime prevention and special projects.
Habitat for Humanity is building two duplexes in St. Albert in 2009 to help four hard-working St. Albert families find affordable housing. In June, one of these duplexes will be a “blitz build” - constructed in 14-days with the help of over 750 volunteers. Habitat for Humanity Edmonton’s mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting home ownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.
