YWCA Women of Distinction Awards Gala

This gala is an inspirational and exciting celebration of talent and achievement honoring Edmonton and area women who have made unique and exemplary contributions in our community.  There are 23 different categories with 54 nominees ranging from Advocacy, Community Service, Industry, Construction and the Trades to Youth 18 and under.  There were over 1000 people in attendance.

The category the REALTORS® Community Foundation sponsored was 'Turning Point'.  This category recognizes a woman for undertaking a change in her life's direction who has used this change to move towards new goals for the improvement of herself, her family and the community in Edmonton and area.

Four women were nominated including Gloria Meldrum founder of Little Warriors founded to prevent child abuse, Rachel Johnston, an incredible woman who fought a debilitating medical condition and underwent special training to help kids in crisis, Debra Ward, a tireless worker for women's rights and a volunteer at the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton.  The award recipient was Tammy MacDonald co-founder of Hair Massacre inspired by her youngest daughter’s battle with cancer.  Tammy then went on to raise funds for oncology and the Make A Wish Foundation.

President Elect of the REALTORS® Community Foundation, Gail Docken said, "It's amazing to be in a room of so many incredible, talented women.  I feel honored to be here".

And most importantly, proceeds from the event support YWCA programs such as Girlspace, The Counseling Centre, and Lakeside Haven where families recovering from domestic violence can learn to be families again.
